Axios Twin Cities: Young boaters may need a permit under new law

Axios Twin Cities published a writeup on Minnesota’s new boater education law, enacted in 2023, as it takes effect for some boaters this year. Below is an excerpt of their piece:

What’s next: A year from now, boaters born after June 30, 2000 will need a permit. Starting in 2027, the requirement will apply to those born after 1996.

  • Finally, in 2028, the permit will be required for those born after 1987.

What they’re saying: “Across all the states that we’ve seen these sort of laws implemented, we have seen marked decreases in user conflicts on the water and bad boating behavior,” Jesse McArdell of the National Marine Manufacturers Association told the Star Tribune.
